18 tips for a successful job interview

Check out our 18 most important job interview tips for an on-point preparation and a successful job interview.

Prior to your job interview #1

Start preparing a couple of days in advance. This way you allow yourself the time to process the information and come up with more in depth questions.

Study the employers’ website and make notes. This way you can ask in depth questions during the interview and show that you have taken the time to get to know them.

Google their company name for extra information about them and their industry. TIP: Filter on the “news” tab in Google for the newest articles.

Take a look at the LinkedIn profile of the person you are going to meet to get a better view of their background. Also do this for your future colleagues.

Always double-check the address and route description to the company.

Take a look at the building on Google Street View so you have a point of reference when you arrive in the neighborhood. Even if you have a navigation system, know that arriving late is often a direct reason for dismissal.

Prior to your job interview #2

Leave home well ahead of time to be prepared for any unforeseen traffic problems. This way you never have to rush and can calmly take part in the interview.

Note down all the names of the people you are going to meet so you can call them by name during the interview or when arriving at the secretariat.

Write down questions and bring these with you. This way you are guaranteed to walk out of the interview with all the information you need to make a well informed decision. Think of the position, daily duties, future planning, training and team composition. Next to this you show you have prepared yourself professionally.

Think about the questions they could ask you (and your answers to them). Of course it is not the intention to have a rehearsed interview, but as you do not look for a job every day testing yourself ahead of time will allow the conversation to flow much more easily.

Think about your unique selling points. What have you shown on the work floor that is a good testimony of your professional value?

During your job interview

Ask the interviewer about their background and what drives them. This is an excellent way of getting to know more about what makes your future colleagues tick.

Be honest about what you can do and do not over exaggerate. That you are not able to do something (yet) is no reason for you not wanting to learn it! Above all, try to be yourself.

Regularly make eye contact. Be sure to divide your attention if you have multiple interviewers.

Ask for clarification if you do not fully understand what is being asked of you. When guessing you run the risk of giving the wrong answer to something that normally you would have known.

Demonstrate your skills by naming examples about what you have done in the past and where you showed those certain skill. Try to be as specific as possible. A good way to do this is using the STAR Method:

  • Situation: What was the situation?
  • Task: What was your task?
  • Action: Which action did you take?
  • Result: What was the result?

If you are enthusiastic about the position be sure to tell them. Do not forget, the person interviewing is looking for people that want to work there for a full 100%.
